Dermoscopy
Dermoscopy or dermatoscopy refers to the examination of the skin using skin surface microscopy. A dermatoscope functionally simulates a magnifying lens, with the added features of much higher magnification, and an adjustable inbuilt illuminating system. Dermoscopy is a relatively new method used by dermatologists to arrive at a diagnosis in doubtful cases. The greatest advantage of dermatoscope in experienced hands of a dermatologist is that it can avoid a skin biopsy to confirm the diagnosis. Even though the classical use of a dermoscope is in diagnosing skin cancer, it has its value in identifying specific features of other skin diseases as well. It can also be employed to assess disease activity, pre and post treatment comparison and better doctor patient communication.
