Hair-loss Treatment
Hair loss and hair thinning represent frequent complaints of both female and male patients in clinical dermatology. Although the cause of hair loss is easily diagnosed in some cases, such as in patients who present with classic male pattern hair loss or patchy hair loss due to alopecia areata, the diagnosis of hair loss also can be challenging. Therefore it is extremely important to consult a qualified dermatologist prior to initiation of any treatment in order to establish an underlying cause of hair loss. Only an expert will be able to provide the right diagnostic and therapeutic modality based on clinical clues.
Hair loss can be broadly divided into scarring (Cicatricial) and non-scarring (Non-cicatricial) types. Various modalities including trichoscopy and skin biopsy may be needed to arrive at the correct diagnosis depending upon the clinical presentation of each. Once the diagnosis is made treatment depends on many factors including the overall extent of the disease, site of involvement etc. An early diagnosis can halt the progression of many such hair loss conditions whereas some of them can even be completely cured.
Once an underlying cause is determined, the aim is generally to correct it. In most cases this approach itself would suffice, but in others many specific goal directed treatment modalities may be necessary. Many oral and topical medications are used in this regard. One aspect of hair loss treatment to be kept in mind is the fact that most of the treatment modalities need a long term follow up to bring about the desired results. However, regular follow up and guidance in the proper direction can be rewarding to the patient.
